Susskind have been making a name for themselves in West Yorkshire recently, and have just released their first EP Open Your Eyes. The guys are influenced by a variety of bands: Alice in Chains, the Afghan Whigs, Foofighters, Pearl Jam, to name a few, and have been compared to Nickelback and Audioslave (not sure if the lads approve of being compared to others though!) Now you may not have heard of Susskind before if you're not from these parts, so why should you buy the CD? Well firstly, if you like your rock with lots of guitar, and a bit of grunge, a bit of metal & a little bit of emo-ness thrown in we think you'll like us. Review by www.cyphermusic.net This EP is absolutely amazing, one of the best local band CD's I have ever heard. I've had it on almost constant repeat all day - very impressed with every track.1. ReasonExcellent opening song, really nice intro and then the heavy crash in just gets straight down to business. Ben's disturbed-esque "oowah!" vocals are hilariously well done, my only criticism is that it's not as catchy and instant as the others. Some parts of it almost sound jungle-esque, especially the drums and vocals in the breakdown. The lead guitar parts are really powerful too.2. HeadlightsWowness! The piano and everything just make this sooo special. My 2nd favourite track, lots of power and beautiful acoustic bits, which is what Susskind are amazingly good at. The layered vocals work really well, and all the guitars fuse together perfectly. The acoustic guitar sound is one of the best I've ever heard.3. AngelI wish you recorded another song instead of this because I've already got a recording of this (even if it isn't great quality). This recording is much better but it just doesn't stand out to me like Headlights and Mr Blue Sky. I'd have preferred a version of A Thousand Miles From Nowhere, but it's still an ace song.4. Mr Blue Sky I am sitting here, just unable to think of words to describe how unbelievable this song is. Lyrically, musically and... just in general. It's amazing - not only on a local band level but also compared to my favourite bands in the world. This song is so powerful and I've been singing it all day. It just has so many levels and different parts and slowly gets heavier. When you are writing songs like this it can't be much time at all until you're signed and touring, and when you are I'll be right there on the front row.
